Please read this carefully....
I don't want to burst your bubble..but...
YES, LABRADORS SHED.
I have a real problem with people
who tell potential customers
that they don't.
It's not fair to the customer ~
and it certainly is unfair to the dog
when he's given up simply because he
sheds.
Trust me, they SHED.
I buy at least two vacuum cleaners a
year.
Is it managable?
Yes, if you aren't afraid of
a little grooming.
All three colors shed.
I feel that yellow shed the most.
Other Lab owners have disagreed with me
and say that black & chocolate hair
is just less noticable.
All I can say is that twice a year,
I am ready to pull out my own hair.
It happens every Spring & Fall.
All Labradors blow their coats twice a
year.
And when they do, it can be hair city.
The best thing to do is to
rake, brush, comb,
rake, brush, comb
until you get all of
the loose hair out.
My black & chocolate Labs
seem to shed very little
the rest of the year.
My yellows shed year 'round.
I call them my "high maintenance" babies
because they do cause me a lot more work.
*Personally, I think they are worth it.
If you groom your puppy right from the
beginning ~
he or she will look forward to it as
an adult.
Some of our best bonding
has been accomplished
while grooming.
When I have the time, I enjoy the special
1-1 time...
[all except for the hair up my nose]
I am not a groomer ~
I am just a breeder ~
so this page
only addresses
what works for me.
I only bathe my adult Labs
when they absolutely need it.
Labs don't require frequent bathing
unless they are really stinky.
I feel it is better to brush at least
twice weekly.
It will distribute the natural oil,
and get rid of the loose hair.
We have major daily grooming sessions
every Spring and Fall.
On grooming days during
the blowing coat season,
it looks like we had a blizzard
in the grooming room.
I prefer to get the hair off
as quickly as possible.
During those times of the year,
I groom every day.
If possible, it is best to groom outside
~
just don't do it on a windy day.
The best tool I have found for this
is a 12" shedding tool.
They are also good
for getting rid
of excess water on the coat.
This is undercoat hair
that I removed from Lucy
in less than five minutes
when she was blowing her coat.
This is why you need a shedding tool ~
The tool I recommend for young dogs is
shown below.
I suggest using it once a week.

This is a smaller tool
with an easy release handle
to form one single blade.
This stainless steel shedding blade
has two surfaces ~
One side has larger teeth for coarse
hair.
The other side has smaller teeth
for fine hair.
My grooming kit always includes:
A slicker brush, a pin brush,
a narrow toothed comb, a wide toothed
comb,
a zoom groom, a 12" shedding tool,
and a bristle brush.
I only use the bristle brush
as a finishing touch
to add shine and luster to the coat.
It is really not all that necessary.
I have never found grooming gloves to be useful.
I spent most of my time
removing the dead hair
from the glove.
I just remove the hair from my brushes
with my wide toothed comb.
I bathe the puppies more often ~
whenever I feel they need it.
This would be
my typical grooming session
for the coat.
1.I brush out all debris with the pin brush.
I then use the shedding blade on the Labradors.
*Please note - I do not use the shedding
blade on the cockapoos
I use the detangling comb instead.
2.I go over the dog again with the wire
slicker brush.
The slicker brush will remove the clumps
of hair left by the rake.
3.I comb the coat with my wide tooth comb.
I pay special attention
to the area under the chin,
the chest and the whisps on the legs.
4.I comb the dog with my narrow tooth
comb,
and again pay close attention to those
areas.
5.I massage the body with the Zoom Groom
to stimulate & increase circulation
6. I apply a finishing touch with my bristle brush.
[If I have the time, I use a little T-Touch]
I personally do not trim
whiskers or eye brows
unless they are growing in a manner
that looks like it could
cause a problem.
I do trim the curly thing-a-ma-bobs
off of the end of the tails.
They have many names but whatever you
call them,
they drive me bonkers.
I call them "whizzers".
If you are as compulsive about them as
I am,
be extremely careful to only cut the
hair....
Do not injure or cut the tail.
This is a "whizzer"....
[It was really hard to let it grow this long]
When you begin to groom
your puppy, it is beneficial
to require your puppy to stand.
This way, he will learn to be still.
When I groom my adults,
during much of the session
they are laying on their side
and just roll over when told.
They like it so much
they often fall asleep.
This is an excellent time
to check for anything abnormal.
You must also care for the ears,
trim the nails,
and provide good dental care.
