Place your puppy in his crate.
After he stops whining,
set the timer for 15 minutes. 
When the timer rings....
Crate time is over.

Send your puppy to
his time out bed.
Set the timer.
When the timer rings...
your puppy is free to play.

They are also useful as a reminder for you
to take your puppy outside to potty.
